Xylitol: A Natural Sugar Substitute

2024-07-20 10:31:22

Xylitol is a natural sugar substitute found in various fruits, vegetables, and plants, and it is also naturally produced by the human body every day. However, the amount of xylitol naturally occurring in fruits and vegetables is minimal, so the xylitol sold in the market is mostly extracted from hemicellulose in birch or corn. The quality of xylitol in different applications and sales is ensured through tests for purity, heavy metals, and biocompatibility, among other chemical properties.

Compared to the same weight of sugar, xylitol contains only about 40% of the calories and less than 25% of the carbohydrates. Xylitol itself does not contain any proteins, fats, vitamins, or minerals. Its glycemic index is only 7, while the glycemic index of regular sugar is 84.

Due to its low calorie, low carbohydrate, and low glycemic index properties, xylitol can be used in low-carb diets (low-sugar diets) or as a sugar substitute for people with diabetes. However, xylitol is not entirely sugar-free and, although it has a lower glycemic index, it can still affect blood sugar levels to some extent.

Studies have shown that xylitol can reduce and inhibit the growth of various bacteria in the mouth and nasal cavity. Unlike antibiotics, which kill bacteria by destroying their cell walls or membranes, how does xylitol inhibit bacteria?

Part of the reason is that some bacteria absorb xylitol as food, but xylitol cannot provide them with nutrients, ultimately starving the bacteria. Additionally, studies have shown that xylitol can prevent some bacteria from adhering to surfaces, reducing bacterial concentration and growth, thus alleviating symptoms.

Xylitol is a safe food additive, but excessive consumption should be avoided. Consuming a large amount of xylitol at one time (about 30 grams or more) can cause bloating or diarrhea. In medical applications, current clinical studies on xylitol have not shown any definite side effects. When used for medical purposes, it is essential to choose medical-grade products that meet relevant tests to avoid adverse effects due to poor product purity or impurities. If using xylitol in conjunction with other treatments, consult a physician.
