The Benefits of L-Theanine: Enhancing Calm and Reducing Anxiety

2024-07-26

Many people enjoy drinking tea not only for its refreshing qualities (thanks to caffeine) but also because of its beneficial components, such as tea polyphenols and L-theanine. The serene and calming feeling that follows tea consumption is primarily attributed to L-theanine. Modern research has shown that L-theanine indeed has a soothing effect on emotions and can counteract the overstimulation caused by caffeine, promoting a state of tranquility. This attribute makes tea superior to coffee.

L-theanine is the most abundant amino acid found in tea leaves and is considered the main source of the "umami" flavor in green tea. As a free amino acid unique to the tea plant, L-theanine does not participate in protein formation, thus it is a non-protein amino acid. It was discovered and named by Japanese scientist Yajiro Sakato in 1950.

If you struggle with anxiety or restlessness that affects your sleep, it is recommended to take 100 mg of L-theanine before bedtime. If you wake up in the middle of the night and find it hard to fall back asleep, taking another 100 mg of L-theanine might help. Unlike melatonin, L-theanine does not cause a "hangover" feeling the next morning, making it a preferable choice.

Numerous animal (cell) and human clinical studies, both domestically and internationally, have reported that L-theanine has significant effects in relieving stress, promoting sleep, reducing anxiety, combating depression, enhancing learning abilities and memory, and protecting the nervous system.

L-theanine impacts central nervous system function by improving levels of dopamine, serotonin, glycine, and GABA in the brain and alleviating stress by inhibiting neuron excitation in the brain. It regulates the levels of glutamate and methionine in the brain, enhancing hippocampal vitality and providing anti-anxiety effects. L-theanine also influences brain waves by increasing alpha waves, which indicate a state of relaxation, and decreasing beta waves, which are associated with tension and anxiety.
